Higher BMI, Chafing & Low Testosterone: Why Men Feel Flat (and what to do tonight)

Saara Jamieson on Episode 1 YouTube cover: Higher BMI, Chafing & Low Testosterone: Why Men Feel Flat (and what you can do tonight)

If you’ve ever decided, “Right - I’m walking every day”… and by day three your inner thighs feel like they’re on fire - you’re not alone.

A lot of men deal with sweaty groin, inner thigh chafing, and heat rash - especially in summer and especially with higher BMI - but nobody talks about it.

This blog breaks down what’s going on (no shame, no weird energy), and gives you practical steps you can start tonight.

In this post:

  • Why higher BMI makes groin chafing and heat rash worse
  • The two-part loop: discomfort + testosterone signalling
  • What to do tonight (3 buckets)
  • The sleep piece most men don’t realise
  • Real feedback from men
  • Clinical resources + references

Episode 1 companion blog: the “why”, the “do tonight” checklist, clinical resources, and real feedback from men.

Why this happens

When BMI rises in men, two things often start happening together:

  1. Down there gets hotter, sweatier, and more prone to chafing and heat rash.
  2. Testosterone signalling often drops with higher body fat, which can show up as feeling flat, less driven, moodier, and not like yourself.

And those two can feed each other - because when you’re uncomfortable, you stop moving, and when movement drops, the loop tightens.

Weight loss is consistency - and consistency dies when you’re uncomfortable.

“Can we just be honest for a second?”

A lot of men are walking around uncomfortable as hell down there and nobody talks about it.

With higher BMI you can get more skin contact, more sweat, more dampness… and then it becomes a painful friction problem.
Next thing you’re doing that awkward walk because your skin feels like it’s on fire.

That’s not weakness. That’s physics.

Quick self-check:

  • Inner thigh chafing after a few days of walking?
  • Heat rash or redness in skin folds or groin creases?
  • Avoiding movement because you know you’ll “pay for it later”?
  • Sweaty groin even when you’re not doing much?

If yes - you’re not alone.

Why higher BMI makes it worse

Body fat acts like insulation - it traps heat closer to the body. Add more skin contact (inner thighs, groin creases), and the area can stay warmer and damp for longer.

That combination of heat + moisture + friction is exactly what sets men up for irritation and rashes in skin folds. [1]

Heat rash can also flare in hot or humid weather, especially where sweat gets trapped. [2]

What to do tonight (simple, repeatable)

You don’t need perfection - you need repeatable wins.

Bucket 1: Dryness is your best mate

  • Shower and fully dry - don’t rush it
  • If you’re rash-prone: cool hairdryer on low for skin creases/folds
  • Change underwear mid-day if you sweat a lot
  • Choose breathable attire where you can (thick heat-trapping layers make it worse)

Bucket 2: Reduce friction (mechanical fixes)

  • Anti-chafe balm on high-friction days (inner thighs/groin crease)
  • Underwear sizing matters:
  • too small = digging in + rubbing
  • too big = bunching + folding (also rubs)
  • Aim for underwear that doesn’t bunch and reduces skin-on-skin contact

If movement hurts because of chafing, you don’t need more discipline - you need less friction.

Bucket 3: Choose movement that doesn’t punish you

If walking feels like sandpaper, you won’t repeat it - so stop choosing punishment.

Start with what you can repeat: cooler-time walks, treadmill + fan, swimming/water walking, stationary bike + fan.

You’re not chasing a heroic session - you’re chasing repeatable wins.

Heading: Want one tool that helps with the heat + friction piece?
Cool Beans is designed to help reduce heat, dampness, and friction by changing the environment and how things sit - especially for men dealing with chafing, heat rash, and that sticky “everything rubbing together” feeling.

Either way — use the steps above tonight. That’s the point.

The sleep piece most men don’t realise

Even if you sleep naked, when men fall asleep everything relaxes and the testes can drop back between the legs.

If it gets too warm, your body can do what it’s designed to do: re-position to cool down - those half-wake moments you don’t remember… but your sleep does.

If you wake up tired and you don’t know why, it might not be your mindset. It could be your body trying to stay cool all night.

If your body has to keep re-positioning all night to cool down, you’re not getting a proper sleep - even if you don’t remember waking up.

Where testosterone fits

Testosterone isn’t just about sex - it affects energy, mood, muscle, fat loss, libido… the whole male operating system.

Research reviews describe a reciprocal relationship where higher body fat and lower testosterone can reinforce each other. [3,4]

Important: this isn’t me telling you to run off and start testosterone therapy. It’s asking: why is it low - and what can you change first?

Real feedback from men (comfort + chafing/heat rash)

Matt (QLD, Australia)

“I bought them for comfort… I’m larger than average downstairs, and normal undies have always been a nightmare - squashed bits and savage heat rash every Aussie summer… Cool Beans fixed it… the painful rash is gone… I didn’t realise how uncomfortable I was until I was suddenly not.”

Joel (VIC, Australia)

“These are the most comfortable things I have ever worn. I don’t tug at my underwear anymore!!”

If you’ve been feeling hot and sweaty down there, dealing with chafing or heat rash - don’t just tolerate it.

Those are signs that your groin is running too hot, too damp, and under too much friction - and that can impact comfort, movement, sleep, and how you show up day to day.

When to see your GP

If you’ve got severe pain, broken skin, spreading redness, discharge, fever, or anything that doesn’t settle - see your GP. Data beats guessing.

Close (every second week)

I’m doing this because I’ve got two kids watching - Heidi and Van - and I want better for the next generation.
If this helped, share it with a man you love.
I’ll see you in two weeks.

FAQ

What causes inner thigh chafing in men?
Usually friction + sweat + heat, especially with skin-on-skin contact and dampness in warmer weather.

How do I stop a sweaty groin and heat rash?
Dry fully after showers, reduce friction with anti-chafe balm, change damp underwear, wear breathable gear, and avoid bunching fabrics.

Is groin chafing worse if you’re overweight?
Often yes - more skin contact and heat retention can increase sweat and irritation in folds.

Can poor sleep affect energy and motivation in men?
Yes - if sleep is disrupted, you can feel flatter and less driven. If heat discomfort causes constant re-positioning, sleep quality can suffer.

What underwear helps with chafing?
Underwear that reduces bunching, reduces skin-on-skin contact, and improves airflow can help reduce moisture and friction.
